Ah, another thought. Are halftone dots ever done such that the lpi equals the dpi? So one dot is one "pixel" of resolution? This would seem to be the most logical linescreen, but would it work?
EDIT: Wait, that's a stupid question, because the dots need to be different sizes to make different shades. Duh. Never mind.
