All the stuff having to do with style is not imposed by the designer. It is imposed by the viewer--mostly the so called "expert viewer" or critic who gets the defacto job of telling the masses what they are "supposed to" find beautiful. Those who praised the Academy painters also damned the Fauves. Later, the Fauves were looked upon as gods and the Academy was damned as nothing but stylistic copies of the Greco-Roman classics. Later, the Surrealist praisers condemned the Fauves, the non-objective lovers damned the whole lot of them, and so on until today. All of the works created throughout history have not changed. Each were either damned or praised at some point in time at the discretion of whoever society looked upon as "Experts". The artists only role was doing the work. Many were dead before disfavor or favor struck their work.
As a viewer, you can choose to look at work you do not care for and blaspheme it or condemn its creator as some sort of categoric name that you dislike like "Artist". You may also praise work you like and give its creator a categoric name that you admire like "genius" or "Designer". That does not change the work or the reasoning behind creation of the work, it only defines your opinion of the work and its maker. We can opine about what we thought was the motivation for or reasoning of the work by the maker but we never truly KNOW it to be true. Of course there are those who may assume everything that they think is true in their own narcissistic mind. No matter how loudly they shout or bang their shoes, their opinion will never be universally shared. Opinion and declaration of good taste and proper style and artistic genius are passing fancies. The work is what it is to any given individual at any point in time and quite up for disagreement. Through all this the work does not change with opinion.
